This was a day of web work. And then more web work. To break it up, I mixed in a little laundry for good measure.
I’ve been really happy with the Verizon Wireless Data setup and the Kyocera KR1. Today though I wished I was on EVDO. About half my work time was wasted on slower uploads (only playing in the 200Kbps range). So, half the hours were billable. Ah well. That’s the price I pay for the view out my window.
The wireless data setup works great for e-mail, blog entries, web surfing, etc. It’s when you’re doing large uploads building an entire new site that you really feel the speed bottle neck. And I felt it today. Watch me roll through EVDO service in the next few days! That would be funny.
In addition to a client web site, the database for this blog went through an upgrade today. So, if you had a hard time getting on between 6 & 7 PST, that was me upgrading. Had I been on a cable modem, it would have been a 10 minute blip. Ah well, once again, the view is worth it.
Working like this isn’t so bad. But there are trade offs. Lower speed connectivity for great views. But lost revenue / time due to the lower speeds. Always about choices.
Now I think I’m going to make the choice to sit on the water for a few. Tomorrow won’t be lost to internet work all day. Maybe part of the day though……
One final item….a question for readers (please feel free to respond)…..
The podcast is at a short term cross road. I’ve figured out how to allow folks to subscribe to the podcast via ITunes and download the latest odd video podcast automatically. But it comes at a price. In order to make it work I’ll have to shut off the podcast statistics. Being techie, I like seeing how many times something is downloaded. So…..
- Ability to access via Itunes, or
- Use the web site for now until the stats issue is worked out?
Let me know your preference. The folks who make PodPress (the utility for the podcasts) are working hard. Multiple upgrades this week, so we’re getting there. They make a great product, and it’s free (open source). Check them out at http://www.mightyseek.com/

Hey Rich, it doesn’t matter to me one way or ‘tuther. BTW, I don’t use iTunes for Podcasts, for the VAP podcasts (and others) I use Doppler for auto downloads that stick them in my podcast media directory (read by Windows Media player) so I can sink them on my PocketPC.
Its great hearing about your adventures… keep it up (and the video). Thanks for sharing, elly
Rich, leave it on the web site…works for me. This way, you get the stats, and we get the video…just so you know, I enjoy virtually traveling with you daily. Keep up the great work!
Rob,
Thanks for the input. By the way, I love The VAP. Great podcast. Got a big fan here!
I’m thinking in time PodPress will work around the issue. Big fan of Podpress too. Really enjoying using the tech while on the road.
Rich
Oh, Elly, I’m going to check out Doppler now too. Thanks for the tip.
