That’s right, I’m sitting at yet another Nissan Dealer.  I’ve been to Nissan in NH, MA, NM (twice), OR, and now AZ.  Here’s what I can tell you.  Nissan has been consistent.  Service, staff, and they’re on target with the work they do.  Here’s hoping I’m impressed once more.

Today is the 45,000 mile tune up!  Wow!  Then again, the truck is an 04′.  It’s done very well towing, navigating new areas, roaming dirt wash board roads, the works.  While it isn’t as comfortable as my old Eurovan, it is close!

Actually, thinking back I realize I haven’t talked too much about my tow vehicle, so I’ll fix that right now.  My Titan has been a fantastic tow vehicle.  In comparison to the Dodge that was owned for a year, the Nissan is actually a vehicle I’d recomend.  The Dodge on the other hand…..ah, don’t get me going.  :)

Over the past year I’ve run across many people who were surprised to see me towing with the Nissan.  I don’t know why.  It handles great, drives like a smaller vehicle, has the get up and go necessary even while towing.  On steep grades I can still get into the passing lane to get around tractor trailers doing 30 mph.  That’s impressed me a ton.

My friends with Airstream Life have also been towing with a Nissan for quite a while.  Their experience has been similar to mine.  No real complaints at all.

I’ll write more this evening to give an update on service here, and on the name of the dealership (forgot to look at their sign coming in).  Also maybe I’ll have a few bouldering photos from Wolf Creek (yet another spot to explore in Prescott).

  1. Rich,

Glad to here your praise of the Titan. We got ours based on Rich Luhr’s experience with the Armada and having read your blog and seeing that you tow with it. We just got back from our first 600 miles of towing across Ohio and the PA turnpike. The Titan was great.

By the way, I’ve been coming to your site since last summer and just want to say thank you for your perspective and many useful tips — I made our blog on Wordpress because of you. Thanks and glad you’ve found a good fit in Prescott.

What is the model and engine size (?) of your Nissan? What is the tow rating? I have a Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab that I use as a tow vehicle now, a 2002, but I am open to other ideas when it is time to replace what I have. I don’t think I could tow more than approximately 8000 lbs. now safely.

  3. Bobby & Peter,

Nice to meet both of you. I returned to the Airstream and had two comments ready and waiting. Glad you’ve been following along too.

Peter, I have the Nissan Titan. It’s a 5.6 liter V8. Been thorougly impressed with it. Towing I usually average 11 - 12 mpg, and unhooked I’ve been seeing 18 highway easy. I also included the “Tow package” with the transmission cooling, and I’ve seen it at work when crossing passes in CO, ID, WY, CA, and here in AZ too.

The rating is 9500 lbs for towing. Whenever I hear tow ratings, I knock 1,000 off for good measure. My trailer, when loaded, is 6,500 pounds. Well within the limits.

Rich Luhr, over at Airstream Life, tows with an Armada. He has a 30ft trailer, I only have a 25. And he’s been very happy. I’d suggest considering disc brakes on the trailer as well. His brakes are incredible on the Airstream, and combined with the Nissan, he can stop on a dime.

Actually, Rich decided on the Armada back in 05 after popping by my place in NH and trying out my Titan. :) He was considering it, and I think he liked the test drive just fine, even with a dizzy / sick passanger at the time. :)

Bobby, I’ll be checking out your blog in just a moment. :) Glad wordpress is working for you too!

    Rich
